The 2015 Epsom Derby is almost a full year away (run on June 6, 2015) but the British horse racing press is already trying to suss out contenders for the country’s most important flat race. Currently the Epsom Derby betting favorites are Highland Reel (10/1) and an Aidan O’Brien trained horse named John F. Kennedy. Obviously the horse is named for the 35th President of the United States–a man viewed in almost saintly terms in his native country and very popular in England as well. JFK is currently 12/1 but the combination of his highly respected connections and famous name could make him the race favorite before long. He’s currently the Epsom Derby betting favorite at Betfair (9/1).

John F. Kennedy is–not surprisingly–a horse with origins in Ireland. His training home (Ballydoyle Stables) is fond of naming their most promising horses after famous people from history. Some previous horse names: Mozart, Galileo, Australia, Camelot and George Washington among others. That served notice to horse handicappers that John F. Kennedy was a very talented thoroughbred and he was bet down to an 8/11 selection in his debut race on July 24. He never looked settled on the track at Leopardstown but managed to overcome a poor start to finish second, albeit a full 9 lengths behind race winner Hall of Fame.

He looked much better in his second race though he did get a competitive advantage due to a late withdrawal. With rain making the track at The Curragh less than ideal trainer Michael Halford scratched his highly touted prospect Portage. John F. Kennedy opened a 9/5 favorite but was bet down to 8/11 thanks to a significant ‘contrarian’ move against him. He rewarded his financial backers with a solid and confident winning effort as he handled an overmatched field with ease.

UK horse betting enthusiasts suggest that JFK is a horse with the perfect pedigree to win the Epsom Derby. His sire, Galileo. won six of his eight races, including the Epsom Derby, the Irish Derby and the King George at Ascot. His mare, Rumplestiltskin, won five of six races as a two year old before moving to the breeding shed. There are some naysayers that suggest it’s far too early to back any horse for the Epsom Derby but JFK looks like a definite candidate to make the race and will likely go off at a shorter price than is being offered now.
