Mohaymen Set For Florida Derby

Mohaymen Set For Florida Derby&h=223&w=348&zc=1

Mohaymen has been the presumptive Kentucky Derby favorite for most of the year but now is in something of a strange position–he’s not atop the Derby Qualification Points Standings. He’ll get a chance to reclaim the top spot on Saturday when Kiaran McLaughlin sends his horse to compete in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. From a personal standpoint, McLaughlin will be looking for a change of fortune after a rough trip to Dubai where his horses met with little success.

First, McLaughlin’s trip to Dubai–he had four runners on the Dubai World Cup card and none finished in the money. In the ‘main event’ he had high hopes for Frosted but he managed only a fifth place finish. The rest of his contingent didn’t fare any better with Marking finishing fourth in the Godolphin Mile), Confrontation settling for sixth in the Golden Shaheen and Lady Shipman taking seventh in the Al Quoz. Frosted was the big disappointment, however, after he had obliterated his challengers in a February prep race. McLaughlin speculated that the higher level of competition could have been the decided factor: “He ran farther than everybody. Just disappointed. He run a huge race in the prep, maybe a difference in competition was the main thing. He didn’t seem to have that finishing kick like he had.”

There’s a chance for redemption this weekend, however, as Mohaymen will almost certainly go off as the favorite in the Florida Derby. Currently, he’s in third place in the Kentucky Derby qualification points standings but the two horses ahead of him have won the first two 100 point prep races. Gun Runner is currently leading the pack with 151 points thanks to victories in the Louisiana Derby (100 points) and the Risen Star (50 points). In second place is a horse named Lani, winner of 100 points in the UAE Derby. Also being run on Saturday is the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park with a max 50 points.

Mohaymen will face another top Kentucky Derby contender on Saturday as he tangles with undefeated Nyquist. If either of these horses wins the Florida Derby they’ll almost certainly go into the first Saturday in May as the post time Kentucky Derby favorite.
