The connections of the top horses in the sport are starting to map out their plans for the second half of the summer and early fall schedule. One of the more intriguing courses has been set for top ranked three year old filly Cathryn Sophia. While it’s not sure if her connections are planning to avoid the *other* top filly in the sport, Songbird, until the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in early November they are keeping her away from her for the time being.

The current plan is for Cathryn Sophia to race next in the $150,000 Princess of Sylmar, a new stakes event created at Pennsylvania’s Parx Racing for three year old fillies at a mile. The race is being billed as a ‘tune up’ for the Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion at Parx on September 24. Cathryn Sophia’s final destination this year will be the $2 million Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita where she’ll meet older fillies and mares and another very tough three year old opponent–Songbird.

Other than an indication that she’ll be entering the Princess of Sylmar from Parx Director of Racing Sam Elliott there’s been nothing communicated publicly about Cathryn Sophia’s current activities or plans for the rest of the year. She hasn’t worked since a third place finish in the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont Park on June 11. The word is that trainer John Servis is currently ‘freshening’ the filly. Beyond that, there’s no definite course–no indication about whether she’d continue on to the Cotillion after the Princess of Sylmar. There’s also not been a definite indication that she’s being pointed to the BC Distaff at all, though everything that trainer Service and owner Chuck Zacney has said prior to now suggests that is the case. It could be a situation where they’re hoping she’ll return to form before a definitive course is set.

The Princess of Slymar is named for the Pennsylvania bred filly who in 2013 won the Kentucky Oaks, Coaching Club American Oaks, Alabama, and Beldame Invitational in consecutive order. Cathryn Sophia’s biggest win was the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks which essentially fell in her lap after Songbird had to scratch out due to injury.
