Horses are just like any other professional athlete–they often hang around long after they should have called it a career. Of course a horse has to rely on their connections to ‘do the right thing’ for them and for that reason many in racing are commending the decision to retire 2014 champion three year old filly Untapable. The daughter of Tapit is now five and a career as a broodmare is the likely next move.

Owner/breeder Ron Winchell announced the decision on his Twitter account: “After having a truly great 3-year-old season and currently the No. 1 U.S. earner for Tapit – it’s time!” The timing of the retirement wasn’t a coincidence. Untapable finished 4th in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Handicap on Saturday night. She entered the race as the odds on favorite and just didn’t fire. That left her with a 2nd and two 4th place finishes in 2016. She hasn’t won a race since the Apple Blossom Stakes in April 2015. She finishes her career with a record of 20-9-5-2 and earnings of $3,926,625.

David Fiske, racing manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds, explains the issue with Untapable: “She went into that last race perfect. She worked great, she looked great. Steve (trainer Steve Asmussen) was very happy with her. There’s no way we would have run her if she wasn’t 100 percent. What’s become of her is she doesn’t relax in her races, and against that kind of competition, that’s a problem. It’s kind of a Jekyll-and-Hyde situation, where she’s perfect until you put her in the gate.”

Untapable was a quick learner, winning a Grade 2 race as a juvenile. In 2014, she won the Kentucky Oaks and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and earned the Eclipse Award as the top three year old filly. She won two other Grade 1 races during her three year old campaign taking victories in the Mother Goose (which she won by 9 1/4 lengths) and the Cotillion. She won only once as a four year old and it would turn out to be her final victory in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom. She is the top North American money earner for two time top sire Tapit, who was also owned and raced by Winchell Racing.
