Treve Officially Retired From Racing&h=223&w=348&zc=1

To the surprise of no one following her second straight Prix De l’Arc victory on Sunday, Treve has been retired from racing and will enter a breeding career next year. Treve’s trainer Criquette Head-Maarek’s post race comments strongly suggested that this was the plan but it was made official on Monday.

Treve will be sent to Haras du Bouquetot, Sheikh Joaan al-Thani’s farm in Normandy, France to launch her career as a broodmare. She’ll join an impressive roster of broodmares including Mizdirection, a two time Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner purchased for $2.7 million last year. According to the European racing press a stallion has not been selected for Treve’s first meeting but later reports have suggested that Harry Herbert, racing manager for Sheikh Joaan’s Al Shaqab Racing, had suggested English stallion Dubawi as a possible match.

Treve’s racing career will end with a record of 6 wins out of 9 lifetime starts over three seasons of racing for earnings of $8,576,167. Along with her back to back Prix De l’Arc victories she also won the French Oaks and the Group 1 Prix Vermeille. Until Monday there had been some speculation that her connections might decide to enter her in one more race but that turned out to not be the case.

On Sunday, Treve put the perfect punctuation on her remarkable career by becoming the first horse to win back to back Prix De l’Arc championships since Alleged in 1978. She did so in impressive and dominating fashion which had been made somewhat improbable by her struggles this season. Following several listless performances and time off due to injury not much was thought of her chances to repeat as Prix champion. As the Prix De l’Arc drew near trainer Head-Maarek insisted that Treve was back in top form though at the time it sounded more like a rationalization than a rational statement. Based on her performance in Sunday’s big race, she looked as good as ever. After the race her trainer gave her plenty of praise commenting: “She is amazing, she is a dream”. Treve had been the Prix De l’Arc betting favorite earlier in the Summer but closed at 11/1.
