Equine superstar California Chrome won’t be racing at Royal Ascot after all. The audacious plan came to an end earlier this week when trainer Art Sherman talked of a swollen foot for the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner he said it was ‘unlikely’ that Chrome would start in the Prince of Wales Stakes. His UK based training assistant Rae Guest made it official with this report: “He’s been X-rayed and there’s no damage, there’s just a bit of pus, and it will take a few days to come right. It’s just a minor thing but it’s very disappointing. It’s inconvenient timing, and he will probably be back to 100 percent in a couple of days.”

Royal Ascot confirmed that Chrome has officially been scratched from the race due to lameness. This is his second missed start on UK soil–he was previously scratched from the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 16.

California Chrome looked sharp in his last start, a runner up effort in the Dubai World Cup. Following that race owner Steve Coburn indicated that Chrome would be heading to Europe. This reportedly has caused a rift with owner Perry Martin and, to a lesser extent, trainer Sherman. At this point, however, it looks like ‘much ado about nothing’ as Chrome will just get a little more traveling experience. So far no indication from any of Chrome’s connections about his next move–the conventional wisdom is that he’ll ship back to the United States in advance of some big races in late Summer and beyond.

UK trainer guest lamented that European racing fans wouldn’t get to watch California Chrome run live: “It’s a shame that European racing fans won’t get to see him in action. “Everybody has put in a lot of work and was looking forward to seeing him run. The main thing is that it’s not life-threatening or anything, it could be much worse for the horse, and while it’s disappointing for us, the key thing is that the horse is OK.”

For now, Chrome is relaxing at Newmarket Race Course in England as he receives treatment for his swollen foot.
