No England Race For California Chrome, Arlington Million Up Next

No England Race For California Chrome, Arlington Million Up Next

The on-again, off-again plans for California Chrome to race in England are now definitively ‘off’. The 2014 Kentucky Derby/Preakness winner is heading home to the United States and will set his sights on the August 15th Arlington Million at Arlington Park in Chicago.

Just a few days ago there was speculation that Chrome would race in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park on July 4th. He had been pre-entered in the race but now the thinking is that he doesn’t have enough time to adequately prepare for that race. Chrome has been suffering from a minor foot injury that kept him out of the Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot. He’s still not completely recovered from that so co-owner Perry Martin decided to take the more prudent course of action and to target the Arlington Million. Chrome suffered a bruised foot and developed an abscess–not a particularly serious injury but one that required some time off training.

California Chrome’s UK trainer Rae Guest told the (UK) Racing Post: “California Chrome is recovering well and we hope to have a shoe back on his foot on Monday. However, we have run out of time to get him ready for the Eclipse and the decision has been made to send him home. Him missing Royal Ascot was a shame for the meeting, a shame for the owners and a shame for racing. It’s been wonderful being associated with the horse and thanks to Art and the owners for thinking of us.”

The thinking now is that California Chrome will have three more races before he retires to stud–the Arlington Million, the October 3 Jockey’s Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park and the October 31 Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Arlington Million is a 1 1/4 mile race on the turf at Arlington Park. Chrome will be in against some tough competition there including Main Sequence, Brazillian shipper Bal a Bali and last year’s Arlington Million Champion Hardest Core.

No word yet on when Chrome will return to the United States other than ‘early July’. Once he clears quarantine he’ll begin his training for the Arlington Million so based on the timeline it will likely be the first few days of July.
